Following complaints of broken glass and bottles being strewn on Goa’s tourist beaches making them unsafe for tourists and locals, the North Goa police on Wednesday ordered a crackdown on drinking in public places, especially on beaches.When called by The Hindu on Wednesday evening, North Goa Superintendent of Police Karthik Kashyap said issued the order following complaints from people in Calangute in the north coastal belt during a public interaction on Wednesday.Mr. Kashyap said, “We received a lot of complaints from tourists and locals about people getting hurt because of broken liquor bottles on the beaches and while swimming in the sea. Therefore, we have given instructions to the police to crack down on drinking in open public places.” He said, “A lot of people are facing inconvenience due drinking in the open.” He said anyone found drinking in open will be booked under Section 34 of the Indian Police Act, 1861. Drinking in the open is banned in Goa under the provisions of the Excise Act. The State recently mooted heavy fines for littering in public places.
