first_imgFRISCO, Texas — The Southland Conference hosts dozens of meetings throughout the year, including annual coaches’ meetings focused on each of its 17 sports, as well as athletic directors and presidents coming together to discuss the 13-member conference as it pertains to athletic competition. This week, the league is hosting a gathering of a different sort by welcoming 60 individuals to Frisco from its campuses for a first-ever Southland Academic Symposium.Participants work in a variety of roles on campus, including compliance, athletic academic services, faculty athletic representatives, registrars, provosts, and senior women’s administrators (SWAs).It begins with a Southland compliance administrators meeting Wednesday followed by a group dinner. The group reconvenes bright and early Thursday for a jam-packed series of meetings.Eric Brey and DeAnna Wiley from the NCAA Academic and Membership Affairs team will lead an “APR Bootcamp” – a day-long discussion on Academic Progress Rate (APR) and revenue distribution garnered by academic achievement. Distribution models are determined individually by each of the 32 NCAA Division I conferences, including the Southland.”The Southland’s inaugural Academic Symposium will focus on the NCAA’s Academic Distribution Plan, with the first distribution coming in June 2020,” says Southland Associate Commissioner for Compliance Services Thomas Samuel. “We believe this is a timely topic to discuss with our membership and expect this will be a worthwhile program for everyone attending.”The agenda also includes risk assessment, an exercise in data analytics and an action planning session that is followed by a Q&A.The meeting’s concept stems from the “Southland Standard” Strategic Plan that was enacted last year. The plan was developed by the Advisory Council and approved by the Board of Directors. It defines and clarifies the league’s vision, mission and core values.The Southland membership includes 13 schools in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas, boasting more than 4,200 student-athletes. Headquartered in Frisco, the league was founded in Dallas in 1963.last_img
