Paramount Theatre announces expanded 10th anniversary season

first_imgThe Paramount Theatre in Rutland announced today an expanded and varied Tenth Anniversary Season of presentations at the Paramount Theatre. The Paramount has expanded to EIGHT performance Series at the theatre, including SUMMER MUSIC, POPULAR MUSIC, CLASSICAL MUSIC, THEATRE, THEATRE DEVELOPMENT, FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT, COMEDY (new this season) and an upcoming, soon-to-be announced film series as well. Bruce Bouchard, Executive Director commented, We, at the Paramount, are immensely proud and happy about what has transpired inside this building and around this community in the past 14 months. In challenging times, both the board of the theatre and the entire community has responded with a resounding vote of confidence and support, and have created the context for success for the organization for years to come. Bouchard continued, We have set perhaps the most ambitious, varied and diverse season to date for the Paramount. From Broadway Theatre to Classical Music, to emerging works from the NYC Musical Theatre arena, to a new comedy series to the Family Entertainment Series to Popular Music Series (and the upcoming film series) there is literally something for EVERYONE within range of our theatre. The Theatre Series kicks off our 10 Anniversary Season in June with Mel Brook s THE PRODUCERS (C-R Productions on tour) and continues with tours of the smash Broadway and Off-Broadway hits ALTAR BOYZ, CABARET, and FORBIDDEN BROADWAY (in its 26th Season in New York). Our Developmental Theatre Series, 30 Center Stage tucks into the summer with two musical projects by important young composer/lyricists: ROOM 16, a musical, by Stephen Sislen, dealing with the Watergate Break-in, and a two-act song cycle from Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk, the authors of last summer s TALES FROM THE BAD YEARS.Two Music Series (Summer Music and Popular Music) will appeal to broad and eclectic tastes with warm weather visits from SUSAN TEDESCHI, LEE GREENWOOD, a bit of world music with BELA FLECK and TOUMANI DIABATE (Mr. Diabate is commonly regarded as the finest instrumentalists from the continent of Africa), return engagements from the Pink Floyd experience, THE MACHINE (nearly sold out last summer) and hometown sensation, DAN TYMINSKI. New York, 1959. Max Bialystock was once the king of Broadway, but now all his shows close on opening night. Things turn around when he’s visited by the neurotic accountant Leo Bloom, who proposes a scheme tailor-made for producers who can only make flops: raise far more money than you need, then make sure the show is despised. No one will be interested in it, so you can pocket the surplus. To this end, they produce a musical called Springtime for Hitler written by escaped Nazi Franz Liebken. Then they get the insanely flamboyant Roger De Bris to direct. Finally, they hire as a lead actress the loopy Swedish bombshell Ulla (whose last name has over 15 syllables). The pros and cons of Conor McGregor’s alleged retirement

first_imgJoin DAZN and watch more than 100 fight nights a yearFighting McGregor meant the biggest payday of your career and if he’s gone, so too are those opportunities.Questions galore: Guess what everyone is going to want to ask every single fighter about between now and the day McGregor announces that he’s back? While it makes sense because it’s massive news, it must be exhausting to have people more interested in your opinion on someone else’s career moves rather than talking about whatever is going on in your own career. Bright and early Tuesday morning, Conor McGregor got the MMA world buzzing by tweeting about his future.Join DAZN and watch more than 100 fight nights a yearFor the second time in his career, the Irish superstar has declared via the social media platform that he’s walking away from the sport: Hey guys quick announcement, I’ve decided to retire from the sport formally known as “Mixed Martial Art” today.I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in competition.I now join my former partners on this venture, already in retirement.Proper Pina Coladas on me fellas!— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) March 26, 2019 The announcement is similar to a message he posted a little under three years ago when his rematch with Nathan Diaz — that was expected to headline UFC 200 — was pulled from the schedule amidst a power struggle between McGregor and the UFC brass: I have decided to retire young. Thanks for the cheese.Catch ya’s later.— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) April 19, 2016 This feels far more like a negotiation tactic than an actual retirement, as McGregor was in talks to return to action against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone just recently, but balked at the idea of being the co-main event. Cerrone has subsequently been booked into a main event pairing with Al Iaquinta set to take place in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada this summer, leaving McGregor without a dance partner for the time being. While it is almost a stone-cold lock that the former two-weight world champion will deliver a “Guess who’s back?” tweet in the next 90 days to announce his next UFC fight, here’s a quick look at the pros and cons of Conor packing it in for real and what it would mean for all involved parties.Pros for Conor McGregorFree time: McGregor has already created additional revenue streams for himself as a brand ambassador and entrepreneur, so officially walking away from the sport would mean he no longer needs to spend hours in the gym and could therefore devote himself further to his different ventures, including his whiskey line, Proper No. 12.Retiring would also afford him more time to spend with his growing family.Leverage: Even if this is a real retirement (it won’t be), McGregor remains the biggest star in the sport and walking away would give him a ton of leverage in any negotiations with the UFC.McGregor can flex and say he’s done with the sport because he’s got tons of money in the bank and more coming in. But while Dana White can wish him well and say that he thinks McGregor should retire, there is no one in the game that generates the kind of money McGregor rakes in, so having him walk away would have a negative impact on the UFC product. Can’t lose if you don’t fight: Just as I don’t think this is a real retirement, I don’t think this is really something that is going through McGregor’s head at the moment, but it’s true nonetheless.McGregor got smothered and stopped in his last appearance and is just 2-2 in his last four fights, yet he’s still wildly popular and his return is in high demand. But how does that change if he loses again, particularly if he gets finished, as he has in each of his last two losses? If he walks away now, he can’t catch another bad loss and give everyone the opportunity to criticize his performance and question whether he’s still got it or not.Cons for Conor McGregorFree time: Maybe having all kinds of free time isn’t a good thing for McGregor, as he could spend even more time hanging out at swanky Miami hotspots and smashing cell phones at five in the morning.Or crashing Bellator MMA events. Or throwing dollies through bus windows. Or burning through the fortune that he’s amassed.Lack of pageantry: How are you going to announce your retirement on Twitter, rather than letting the MMA world give you a massive send-off?Georges St-Pierre held a press conference to declare his future plans and the rest of the week turned into a GSP lovefest, with career retrospectives, fond reminiscences and well wishes from all corners of the MMA universe. If he’s legitimately gone, this was an opportunity for McGregor be held up as the history-making figure that he is and instead, he’s opted to pile up likes and retweets.Going out on a loss: And an ugly one at that.Listen, losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov is nothing to be ashamed of, but if this is indeed the end, it feels somewhat anticlimactic that the boisterous, trash-talking, history-making superstar goes out following a performance where he was dominated from start to finish. You don’t often get to go out on your own terms in combat sports and many of the greats are forced out after an ugly loss or two, but for a guy who said he was ready to return in July just a couple of weeks ago to pull the plug after getting trounced is a weak move.Pros for the UFCNow we can finally move on: If this is real and Dana White really is happy to see him walk away, the promotion can officially get out of the McGregor business and use the various lessons they’ve learned from working with the talented Irishman to promote the active fighters who could serve as his potential replacement. As much as the UFC benefits greatly from McGregor stepping into the cage, it also has to be exhausting constantly being asked about when he’s coming back, the same way it has to be tiring to be bombarded with questions about the Diaz Brothers and GSP and anyone else who fights infrequently, but has a massive following.Power play: All of this feels like a reaction to the UFC wanting to book McGregor into a co-main event slot and if he actually does walk away because things didn’t go his way, that’s a massive muscle flex for the promotion.Everyone expects the UFC to cave and book McGregor into a pay-per-view main event (as they should given his track record), but if the company holds firm, it sends a rigid “my way or the highway” message to the rest of the roster.Cons for the UFCLoss of revenue: McGregor is a cash cow and if he is retiring, he’s taking a whole lot of potential revenue with him.The reason the UFC wants to book him in the co-main event didn’t make sense to anyone, especially given Dana White’s explanation, is that McGregor has headlined three of the biggest UFC events of all-time and two of them were non-title affairs. An event with McGregor and Cerrone as the headliners and a stacked card behind them would perform like gangbusters, just like every other McGregor-helmed show in recent years, and allowing him to walk means letting a lot of money exit alongside of him.The McGregor shadow: Do you really think fight fans and media are going to let Dana White and the UFC stop talking about Conor McGregor?Nick Diaz hasn’t fought in four years and people still talk about him all the time, so if McGregor does in fact retire, White better expect even more questions about the first man to win titles in two different weight classes simultaneously than ever before.Additionally, it would just feel anticlimactic — that the UFC missed a great opportunity to get one or two more quality fights out of the guy before he truly walked away for good and it would take a good long while for people to get over it.And that’s normal people — MMA fans might not ever get over it.Pros for Other FightersEasy callout opportunities: McGregor already gets called out by just about everyone, but you would have to assume that even more fighters would start launching verbal salvos at the former lightweight and featherweight champion if he does walk away.Less likely to get caught out at a press conference: Jeremy Stephens won’t have to worry about speaking up at press events any longer, while lightweight and welterweight stars won’t have to prepare for the barrage of insults, mockery and fan boy attacks on social media that accompany being matched up with McGregor.Maybe they can get some attention now: To be fair, the UFC has been doing a better job of late when it comes to showcasing the active fighters on the roster, but if McGregor has actually retired, all the energy that was previously devoted to him (or held in reserve for when he did come back) can be directed elsewhere. Some of the promos the UFC put together around McGregor fights were amazing and while no one has the same “force of nature” presence as the 30-year-old Dubliner, imagine what kind of impact building a UFC 189-style promo around Max Holloway or Amanda Nunes or Valentina Shevchenko or anyone else could have on their careers.Cons for Other FightersNo more red panty nights: As much as McGregor introducing “Red Panty Night” into the MMA lexicon was a funny moment, the underlying facts of what he was saying were true. Update: On Tuesday afternoon, the New York Times reported that Irish police are investigating McGregor for an alleged sexual assault of a woman in December. The alleged victim claims that McGregor assaulted her in the Beacon Hotel in Dublin. McGregor hasn’t been charged with a crime in the case and whether this reported investigation has anything to do with the timing of his retirement announcement is unknown.Previously: If this really is the end for Conor McGregor, here’s a look at the pros and cons for “The Notorious” one, the UFC and his former colleagues who continue to compete inside the Octagon.last_img read more
